Community Support

Counselling Services

North Tyneside and Northumberland Online, Phone or In-house

Counselling is a form of support that enables the development of greater personal resilience. Our counselling services focus on using your strengths to develop new strategies for finding solutions to difficulties. We specialise in a wide range of needs, including anxiety and depression, relationship difficulties and more. Our team of volunteer and paid counsellors provide low-cost counselling services.

Talking Therapies

Psychotherapy for Deep and Long-Lasting Change. Psychotherapy is a talking therapy that helps make deep and long-lasting changes. By looking at both current circumstances and past situations we can identify patterns and preferences that take charge of our lives. This heightened understanding helps change these patterns and rediscover lost or overlooked parts of ourselves.

Which Talking Therapy is Right for Me?

If you are unsure about choosing between counselling and psychotherapy, we can help you talk it through and make a decision. We believe it is usually better to start small and progress from there. Our counsellors are members of BACP or UKCP and are experts in various areas such as anxiety counselling, PTSD, depression counselling, anger management, abuse counselling, bereavement and grief counselling, stress management and low self-esteem.

1-1 and Online Counselling Sessions

We offer 1-1 and online counselling sessions. If you can commit to attending scheduled sessions, please apply. Non-attendance at scheduled sessions reduces the availability of sessions for our members and has a cost to the charity. If you miss a session without letting us know you will be removed.

Cost of the Service

Anxious Minds runs a low-cost counselling service with a cost of £30 per session. We encourage you to discuss your counselling needs with your GP first if you feel able to do so. Your GP can refer you to a range of general and specialist mental health services, so talking openly with your GP may help you access the right service the first time around.

Contact Us

Counselling is accessed by an internal referral system. Please speak to a member of our staff who can help you with this. Give us a call and the Counselling Coordinator will discuss this with you when we can allocate you to a counsellor.

Face to Face Counselling

The counsellor sees the client in a confidential setting, such as our base in Blyth and Wallsend or our outreach venues across the North East.

Telephone Counselling

The counsellor arranges a telephone counselling appointment at a convenient time and the counselling session takes place over the phone.  Which means the client can access the service from their home or work.

Group Counselling

People with similar problems and experiences come together in a private and confidential setting with a trained counsellor. Everyone in the group talks and listens to each other and works through their problems as a collective.

Multi -Award-Winning Counselling Services

Anxious Minds have been delivering counselling services for over nine years. Our services are not funded, so we rely on donations to fund the centres and services supporting around 200 people a week.

We take referrals from all local GPs’ Mental Health and Crisis Teams from North Tyneside and Newcastle and Veteran’s Mental Health Services, and other Charities. The service has been the highest-rated service on Healthwatch, and had an external validation completed in 2020, with funding provided by the Association of Mental Health Providers scoring 98% with a grade of ‘OUTSTANDING’. More than 95% of our referrals are seen within two weeks making our provision accessible when needed most.

The project has won the Leading Mental Health Support Services of the Year for the last two years. UK Enterprise Awards and Winner of the MARKEL 3rd Sector Care Award in 2025.

Community Mental Health Services

community mental health

For the past six years, Anxious Minds has provided award-winning Drop-in and Recovery Services, offering a vital safe haven for individuals experiencing mental health difficulties. Our services are accessible to all, regardless of age, background, or level of need, and are designed to reduce stigma, isolation, and crisis through early, community-based support.

Our Drop-in model allows people to access immediate, non-clinical help without referral or long waiting times. It offers a welcoming, informal space where individuals can receive emotional support, practical advice, and take part in wellbeing activities. Our Recovery Services provide structured follow-on care, including one-to-one counselling, group therapy, and peer support.

We’ve supported thousands across the North East, improving mental health outcomes, fostering resilience, and empowering individuals to rebuild their lives. Our person-centred, grassroots approach has been widely recognised and praised. With continued investment, we can expand our reach and ensure no one faces mental health challenges alone.

The Veteran & Community Kitchen

Join Us at the Veteran and Community Kitchen!

At Anxious Minds, we believe in more than just feeding the body; we feed the soul. Our Veteran and Community Kitchen is more than just a place to eat—it’s a sanctuary for individuals and families teetering on the brink of crisis. Every week, we provide a warm, welcoming environment where veterans and members of the community can come together, share a meal and find much-needed support.

Why Our Kitchen Matters

  • A Lifeline in Crisis: For many, our kitchen is the first point of contact in accessing a wide range of support services. It’s a space where they are met with understanding, respect and practical help to navigate through tough times.
  • More Than Just a Meal: Sharing a meal in our kitchen is more than just nourishment; it’s about community, hope and solidarity. It’s a reminder that no one has to face their challenges alone.
  • Addressing Deeper Issues: Beyond feeding the hungry, we connect people with additional resources, from mental health support to social services, helping address the root causes of poverty and economic distress.
  • Building Resilience: Our kitchen fosters a community that stands together, providing pathways toward stability, self-sufficiency and a brighter future.

Together, we can make a difference. Visit the Veteran and Community Kitchen today and be a part of something bigger—a community united in compassion, support and change.
